I saw The Winter's Tale in the magical surroundings of the Bodlian quad which readily transmuted into a castle in Sicilia. The acting company are an excellently
vibrant ensemble. The production is fluent and moving. I particularly liked Brendan
Hughes' Polixenes which was both restrained and courtly but vibrated with a sexual
charisma which always hinted at possible dalliance. An actor to watch out for! Leontes, having fallen into a rage of jealousy, just goes on digging himself in deeper. We know in our heads that we are not really watching a statue come to life but in this production we feel we are.

We have been lucky to experience this play at 2 distinctly different venues - The Pavilion Gardens, Buxton and at The Globe on 11th August. We thoroughly enjoyed our first experience but it was interesting to see how it had evolved in the interim. All the actors seem to gel together extremely well bringing out the tragedy and humour of the play to best effect. Michael Benz is superb as Paulina, I do not think anyone will ever be able to match his performance. Sasha Hails and John Dougall show great passion in their roles as Hermione and Leontes. Fergal McElherron is quite superb as Autolycus. First prize must go to Benjamin Askew as Florizel who looked as he had the sadness of the whole world upon his shoulders when he love for Perdita was threatened by Pholixines. I hope we see more of him at The Globe in the future. Lastly a mention for the bear who ran out of puff chasing Autolycus around the stage at The Globe. I hope the tradition of travelling theatre continues despite the current trend in the weather.
